The Drama Behind the Post

So, yes, it's Thursday and I'm over at Playdate talking about the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight.

What the post doesn't talk about is how hard it is to actually get out to see a movie once you have kids. First, you have to find someone who is willing to look after a 3-year-old AND a baby. Luckily, we have three sets of grandparents who are very good about us coming to visit and leaving the kids there for a couple of hours.

Second, with breastfeeding and naps, the timing has to be perfect. I knew we were in trouble when the Little Guy woke up a full hour and half before his usual crack of dawn waking time. And would not go back to sleep. After his morning nap, we jumped in the car and drove to the in-laws. I fed him and we jumped back in the car, minus kids, to make the noon show.

The movie was awesome! But when we got back, we found out that the Little Guy had been screaming or fussy for the past two hours, as we were greeted with the following salutation:

"Your second son is a hellion."

My first reaction was guilt. I don't like to hear that the Little Guy was not happy, and I felt bad for wanting to take time for myself. (Eventhough everyone needs a break sometimes!) I also felt bad that my mother-in-law had to put up with the screaming. I've been there and it's no fun.

My second reaction was anger. I take great exception to someone calling the Little Guy a hellion (other than myself or Mr Earth), even if they meant it as a "joke". And even I don't use the word hellion, and I tend to be over-dramatic (ahem). I usually use the word(s), Crankee-Doodle-Dandee, or Crankasaurus. Or NOT HAPPY. In capital letters.

And, just to be super duper nit-picky and grammatical, I would really prefer that she said "He acted like a hellion." He is most decidedly NOT a hellion. He is quite a happy baby most of the time. He simply wants what he wants and WOE BETIDE the person who does not give it to him right away. But as he is still a baby, he cannot tell you what he wants.

Anyways, we were supposed to stay for dinner, but my mother-in-law didn't have time to cook because she had to hold the Little Guy for the whole two hours. I suggested that we order something - on us (oh the guilt) - but I could tell that she was tired and would rather that we take our kids and go.

No skin off my nose. The rest of the day worked out just fine. We got home in time to calm the kids down with dinner and quiet play before bedtime. But I guess you could say we were sent home without our supper.

Go over and read the post at Playdate if you want to know what I thought about the movie.

See this? THIS is why my mother-in-law doesn't babysit. THIS and she yells at The Boy all the time (but never, ever at his equally misbehaving sisters. WTF?).
Was he making strange? Poor fella. That happened once to me when my husband and I went out for a quick anniversary supper and The Baby SCREAMED at my mom for the whole time.

My mother doesn't understand the power of labelling either. When we were away recently we were able to score two adjoining hotel rooms - one for the girl and one for us. I don't need to explain why - we get to sleep! And stay up later than the girl.

Anyhow, my mom called her.own.granddaughter a "spoiled brat" because she had her own hotel room.

With all due respect to Mr. Earth (it is his mother after all)...

There are no words. My jaw dropped on the floor when I read that. How can anyone, much less a grandparent, say that about a baby? I mean, seriously?

Reminds me of the time my FIL said something about my kid... can't post it here... too disgusting.

Beck - yes, I think we've entered the making strange age. Sigh.

SciFi Dad - We have 3 sets of grandparents, and it was actually his stepmother. She is a lovely woman who adores the grandkids and would do anything for them and thanks to her, we have not yet had to pay for babysitting. But I still object to the word "hellion".

Yeah, I'd be angry too. That's just not cool. I mean, you'd feel bad about him being fussy, right up until that popped out. I totally agree about labelling the behaviour, not the child, too, even if you need to say something out of frustration. Still, when it comes to children, I think mindfulness fo your words is important.

Plus? I've met your little guy. SO not a hellion. ONe of the cutest and happiest, in fact.

My nose would be so far out of joint, it would need it's own postal code. Gigi is even upset because she loves your little hell.. I mean she loves the Little Guy. Mind you, I have equally matching stories... so I feel for you. It's never right especially the fact that it was "is a" not "acted like a".

Hum. I was JUST telling my girlfriend about something my MIL did when my older girl was a babe.

hmmm. angry feelings...

aaannnnyhow. I want to see that movie BADLY.

Yup. That would have upset me too. I got ticked off at my MIL when she called me a vampire because I didn't want to eat in 200 degree heat. If she'd have worded it differently, I would have laughed.

Ah yes, the babysitting stopped when we had #2.
I understand the guilt (for poor little guy) but glad you got to enjoy a movie. As a mom, I know it was well deserved.

That's just...thoughtless.

You're lucky to have grandparents around. My little guy has three sets of grandparents too...but they're in Michigan and we're in Germany. When it comes to babysitting that's bad. But sometimes it's nice to be "just us"...you know?

It was a movie!!!! (I'm screaming at your mother-in-law right now.)

What's with grandmothers? It's like they instantly forget that kids aren't perfect and easy. AH! Hope the movie was good.

You know, NO ONE is allowed to call your kid names. No matter how closely related to you they are. Because the claws will come out and words will be exchanged that will not be good for future babysitting purposes...

Our LG is most commonly referred to as a Crabby Patty during her times of hellionishness. Sorry the babysitting didn't work out so well but I'm still glad you got to go out and see movie.
